Future Developments
The
Shoalhaven City Council’s Northern Regional Effluent Management Scheme or
REMS is currently investigating strategies for the management of effluent from
sewerage schemes in the Nowra – Jervis Bay region. This involved an
investigation into:
-
maximization
of land application of effluent from Nowra, Bomaderry, St Georges Basin
and Huskisson STPs with excess effluent released to the Shoalhaven River
via a constructed wetland to be located at Terara (MHL735 1995, MHL746
1996, Patterson, Britton & Partners 1995).
-
the release
of excess effluent to the ocean - ocean release via the existing Penguin
Head outfall is the preferred option
-
Culburra
STP effluent will be disinfected in future to comply with bathing water
standards.
-
prior to
the implementation of REMS an STP is proposed to be built for the
presently unsewered communities of Callala Bay, Callala Beach and Myola,
with the treated effluent directed to the existing Penguin Head
shore-based release.
-
REMS
involves upgrading the existing nearshore ocean release at Penguin Head to
cater for excess effluent flows from the Culburra, St Georges Basin,
Huskisson and the proposed Callala STPs.
-
subject to
hydraulic capacity constraints and receiving water quality criteria, it
may be necessary to provide an offshore ocean release at Penguin Head,
either for future Culburra STP flows or for additional effluent from REMS.
